UK Owned Ship Abandoned After Houthi Attack
A UK registered cargo vessel was attacked this week, which is perhaps the most damaging incident since the Houthi rebel campaign started, as the crew had to to abandon ship.
The bulk carrier ‘Rubymar’ was travelling in the Gulf Of Aden on Sunday night, when it was struck by a missile around 60 km south of Yemen’s port of Mocha. Houthi reports suggest that the vessel is sinking but there is no official confirmation of that. However, military reports have suggested the vessel was taking on water when the crew of 24 were rescued.
Carriers have been directing vessels around the Cape Of Good Hope for a few weeks now to avoid the Red Sea, and despite US & UK air strikes on targets in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, there is little sign of that changing in the near future.
Other ship attacks in the past few days include a Greek bulk carrier that was attacked twice on Monday, and reports of two more attacks on US owned cargo vessels in the Gulf of Aden, namely the vessels ‘Sea Champion’ and ‘Navis Fortuna’.
