Ocean Carriers Clamping Down On Lithium Batteries
Ocean freight carriers are starting to tighten up on the shipment of lithium batteries, which can no longer be loaded together with other dangerous goods.
From October 1st, we understand that several carriers are planning to introduce a surcharge for containers that carry lithium battery powered products, due to the increasing risks of transporting and storing them.
Last year, the British International Freight Association (BIFA) issued a warning to their members regarding the movement of lithium batteries, describing them as a ‘threat to transport’.
The fact that carriers will no longer accept them in the same container as other hazards will likely have a significant impact on LCL shipments. Traditionally, class 9 classified products have been able to move fairly freely with other classes, but from next week it could be more difficult to get lithium battery bookings accepted for LCL.
It’s not just ocean freight carriers that are clamping down on these products. We previously advised of air freight regulation changes that will be effective from January 2025 in this article Incoming Rule Changes For Lithium Batteries.
