New Tech Employed To Fight Lithium Battery Ship Fires

Hyundai Glovis, the motor logistics unit for Hyundai Motors, has designed a device for its car carrying fleet that suppresses fires that break out during the movement of electric cars powered by lithium-ion batteries.

In the event of an electric vehicle catching fire, the company’s new EV Drill Lance bores a hole from underneath the vehicle directly into the battery pack and disperses water to extinguish the flames.

The drill attaches to a pole, so can be operated by crew from a safe distance. This allows safety teams to focus directly on the battery fire at an early stage to stop the fire spreading.

Fires on ships caused by electric vehicles and lithium batteries have made the headlines in several high-profile incidents during the past couple of years, which we have reported on extensively.

According to the company, an EV Drill Lance takes just two minutes to drill the hole into the battery pack, allowing fires to be extinguished within 30 minutes. Hopefully the new tech will prove to be effective and we see the inclusion of more new devices to fight this dangerous threat.
