Another fire on a cargo ship, which was carrying almost 3,000 cars, has left one sailor dead and 22 further crew members injured off the coast of the Netherlands.
Members of the crew initially tried to put out the fire themselves, but became overwhelmed and were forced to leap 30m into the sea to escape the blaze, which could burn for days.
The Panamanian-flagged vessel ‘Fremantle Highway’ became engulfed in smoke after leaving the port of Bremerhaven on Tuesday on course for Port Said, Egypt.
The coastguard are currently unaware what caused the fire, but had suggested it may have been connected to one or more of the 25 electric cars onboard.
Ship fires have been increasing in frequency over the past few years, with many attributed to dangerous goods. Earlier this month we reported on another car carrier catching fire in the Port of Newark, which resulted in the loss of life for two New Jersey firefighters.
