Dangerous Goods Explosion In Ningbo

A large explosion on a container ship shook Ningbo Zhoushan Port in China last week, which has been directly attributed to dangerous goods products.

The vessel Yang Ming Mobility was docked at the port when one of it’s dangerous goods containers exploded and sent a plume of flames and smoke into the air.

The container is understood to have contained organic peroxide, which is a class 5.2 hazard. Organic peroxide is a highly combustible reactive chemical that causes heat to rise as outside temperature increases.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but the terminal has since been closed. As a result, the port is suffering from backlogs, congestion and delays, with berthing schedules for upcoming vessels being adjusted accordingly.
