Containership – 70 Containers Lost Or Damaged
Over 70 containers were lost or damaged during a voyage from Asia to Europe, as extreme weather conditions battered sailings around the Cape Of Good Hope, South Africa.
The container vessel ‘CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin’ lost 44 containers overboard last week and a further 30 were reported to be damaged during the storms.
The French carrier confirmed that the vessel had to proceed for an unscheduled stop at Cape Town for a detailed assessment of the situation and to ensure it was safe to continue it’s voyage. The vessel was considered fully seaworthy and sustained no damage during the incident and no crew members were injured.
South Africa has witnessed adverse weather conditions during the past week, with strong winds and high waves along its coastline, especially between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The extreme conditions have delayed several sailings, which includes the Asia to Europe services that are currently being routed through the region due to the Red Sea crisis.
This loss highlights the need for importers and exporters to ensure they are full covered with Cargo Insurance, as all carriers and logistics providers are protected by limited liability conditions. Without the appropriate and necessary cover, the full value of the goods lost is unlikely to be recovered.
