2025: New Dangerous Goods Regulations Including Batteries

November 14, 2024

New Dangerous Goods Regulations Including Batteries

Several changes to dangerous goods regulations will be effective from January 1st, which includes changes for some UN numbers and new rules for the transporting of lithium and sodium batteries.

A transitional period will apply in the majority of cases, which extends through the first half of 2025. However, for shipments moving by air, most of the new regulations will be implemented from the turn of the year.

Dangerous goods regulations are regularly adapted to stay aligned with changing requirements and safety standards. However, the new regulations do target the increasing risks associated with the movement and storage of lithium batteries in particular, and that includes electric vehicles, which have been blamed for at least two fatal car ferry fires this year.

The highlights of the changes are:

– The introduction of new UN numbers for some product types.
– New regulations for transporting lithium and sodium batteries – more detailed specifications have been defined for packaging, labelling, and documentation.
– New structures and regulations for transporting electric vehicles.
