World Shipping Council Warns of Persistent Dangerous Goods Failings
The World Shipping Council (WSC) has released a new report highlighting ongoing shortcomings in the movement of dangerous goods internationally.
According to the report, 11.4% of inspected cargo shipments were found to have deficiencies, a slight increase from 11% the previous year. These deficiencies range from mis-declared and undeclared dangerous goods to incorrect documentation and improper packing – failures that significantly raise the risk of shipboard incidents, including fires.
“Cargo safety starts with correct declaration and safe packing of goods,” said the WSC President. “With over one in 10 shipments showing deficiencies, the message is clear: gaps in cargo safety remain far too common. Cargo deficiencies put crews, ships, cargo, and the environment at risk.”
The findings underscore the urgent need for stronger compliance and enforcement measures in global shipping. Mis-declared or poorly handled cargo has been linked to several high-profile maritime accidents in recent years, causing costly damages and the loss of lives at sea.
The WSC is preparing to launch a new industry-wide cargo safety program aimed at strengthening screening processes and improving inspection standards across the supply chain.
