Wildfires Continue To Disrupt Freight Across France And Spain
Wildfires across France and Spain continue to create serious challenges for freight transport, despite signs that some individual blazes are beginning to stabilise.
A fresh heatwave is bringing temperatures above 40°C to parts of south-west France, while similarly extreme conditions across Spain are maintaining a high risk of fires spreading or reigniting.
In France, disruption has extended well beyond the evacuation of warehouses and commercial premises. Road closures have affected important routes serving Bordeaux, the Arcachon basin and surrounding areas, forcing regional hauliers to make lengthy diversions. Where motorways and secondary roads are inaccessible, journey times can increase significantly, adding cost, fuel consumption and uncertainty to collection and delivery schedules.
Spain has faced similar problems, with fires affecting roads across the country. Severe disruption has been reported around Madrid and Ávila in central Spain, as well as Toledo to the south and Castellón on the eastern coast. Although some restrictions have eased, the situation remains changeable as high temperatures and dry winds continue.
Regional businesses may also have to contend with product damage to goods stored or transported close to affected areas. Smoke, ash and soot can contaminate exposed cargo, packaging and facilities, creating particular concerns for food, textiles and other sensitive products.
