UNECE Urges Global Action on Dangerous Goods Safety
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is calling on governments worldwide to tighten safety and security measures for the management of dangerous goods.
The UNECE cited an urgent need to prevent further industrial disasters with devastating human and environmental consequences.
The call follows the recent explosion and fire at Shahid Rajaei port near Bandar Abbas, Iran, on April 26th. The blast killed at least 57 people and injured over 1,200, severely disrupting port operations and impacting the surrounding community.
Toxic smoke from the incident poses long-term health and environmental risks. According to Iranian authorities, the tragedy was the result of negligence and non-compliance with hazardous chemical storage and handling regulations.
This is not an isolated event. Past disasters such as the Beirut port explosion in 2020, Tianjin in 2015, Bata in 2021, and the West Fertilizer explosion in Texas in 2013 reveal a troubling global pattern: insufficient oversight and poor management of dangerous substances. In some cases, these events spurred governments to enhance inspections, enforce regulations, and raise public awareness—yet gaps remain.
As countries update their safety frameworks, UNECE stresses the need for comprehensive risk assessments, especially amid the global energy transition. Many technologies involved in this shift rely on dangerous goods that, if mismanaged, can cause severe accidents. Compounding this is the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters due to climate change, which can trigger or worsen such incidents.
UNECE’s message is clear: strengthening dangerous goods safety is not optional—it’s essential for global resilience.
