Undeclared Dangerous Goods Caused Explosion at Incheon Port
South Korean authorities have confirmed that a container which exploded at Incheon Port in late August was carrying significant amounts of undeclared dangerous goods, including LPG cylinders and butane canisters.
The incident occurred on August 28th in the yard of the Incheon Hanjin Container Terminal. The Maersk container had been declared as holding used cars, but investigators discovered combustible goods hidden among the vehicles that should have triggered strict handling and storage protocols had they been properly documented.
The explosion caused damage to nearby containers and terminal infrastructure, though fortunately no serious injuries were reported. Terminal operations were temporarily disrupted as mobile cranes and emergency teams worked to clear debris and secure the affected area.
Authorities stressed that the failure to properly declare dangerous goods placed port workers and operations at unnecessary risk. Undeclared and misdeclared hazardous cargo remains a persistent problem in global shipping, despite increasingly stringent inspections, regulations, and penalties implemented by carriers and government agencies.
