Northern European Strikes Deepen Ongoing Port Congestion Issues
A wave of industrial action sweeping through Northern Europe is creating widespread disruption and compounding congestion at three of the region’s busiest ports.
Strikes and work stoppages in Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Zeebrugge have slowed cargo handling and vessel movements, worsening the logistical challenges that have plagued European ports throughout the year.
In Belgium, operations at the twin ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge were brought to a standstill on the evening of October 13th due to a nationwide strike opposing pension reforms. Port activity is expected to resume on October 15th. The walkout follows several days of “work-to-rule” action by marine pilots, who have restricted their hours to between 08:00 and 17:00, delaying vessels that require compulsory pilotage for entry.
In the Netherlands, dockworkers in Rotterdam launched a strike on October 8th due to an unresolved dispute over wages and working conditions. Although a court order forced a temporary return to work on October 13th, the strike could resume at 7:00 am on October 17th if negotiations fail to produce an agreement. Industry observers report that terminal operations have been “severely disrupted,” with vessel turnarounds and cargo handling facing significant delays.
Given that both Antwerp and Rotterdam have been among Europe’s most congested ports this year, the latest round of industrial action is expected to intensify bottlenecks and impact global supply chains, affecting shipping schedules beyond Northern Europe.
