New Roadside Inspections To Boost Safety Of Dangerous Goods Transport
A new targeted enforcement campaign aimed at improving the safe transport of dangerous goods is set to begin across Northern Ireland’s roads this May.
The initiative, led by the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland in partnership with other enforcement agencies, will focus on rigorous roadside inspections of vehicles carrying hazardous materials.
Transporting dangerous goods remains essential to many sectors. However, it also presents serious risks to public safety, property, and the environment. According to HSENI’s Principal Inspector, the campaign is designed to ensure that all operators fully comply with the strict regulations governing such transport.
These requirements are set out in the Carriage of Dangerous Goods & Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations. They define which substances are classified as dangerous, outline proper labelling and packaging standards, and specify mandatory driver training. In addition, they detail the safety equipment and documentation that must accompany each vehicle.
Vehicles transporting hazardous goods must carry essential safety items, including fire extinguishers, warning signage, high-visibility clothing, gloves, eye protection, spill kits, and wheel chocks. Failure to meet these standards could result in enforcement action.
With inspections set to increase, we encourage businesses moving dangerous goods within Northern Ireland, or between the UK mainland and Northern Ireland, to speak to us about any immediate concerns they may have about compliance.
