Middle East Tensions LIkely To Drive Fuel Surcharges Higher
International freight costs will likely face renewed pressure following a substantial rise in oil prices caused by the latest escalation across the Middle East.
Over the past two to three weeks, fighting has intensified between Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi-backed forces. The Houthis have launched missile and drone attacks against targets in southern Saudi Arabia, including energy infrastructure, prompting retaliatory air strikes from Saudi and Yemeni forces.
The group has also made advances along Yemen’s western coastline, bringing it closer to the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This narrow waterway connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and represents a critical route for international shipping and energy supplies.
Further pressure has come from an attack attributed to another Iran-backed militia, which disrupted Saudi Arabia’s East–West Pipeline. The pipeline transports oil to the Red Sea and provides Saudi Arabia with an important alternative export route when movements through the Strait of Hormuz are restricted.
Together, these developments have raised concerns about the security of both Middle Eastern oil production and the routes used to transport it. Brent crude has climbed to approximately $108 per barrel this month—an increase of around 15% in the past three weeks.
Rising oil costs affect every major mode of domestic and international transport. Airlines, shipping lines and road hauliers are therefore likely to adjust the fuel mechanisms used to recover their higher operating costs.
However, pump prices and freight fuel surcharges generally lag behind movements in Brent crude. The full impact may consequently take another two to three weeks to appear in freight rates and transport surcharges.
