Leipzig Incident Highlights Dangerous Goods Security Challenge
German authorities are investigating a serious security incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport this month after an explosive-laden drone was reportedly discovered beside a cargo aircraft.
The aircraft was understood to be carrying ammunition, which is transported as Class 1 explosives, together with jet fuel, a Class 3 flammable liquid. Reports also suggest that a diverted DHL freighter carrying unspecified dangerous goods may have struck another suspected drone before landing safely.
While the circumstances remain under investigation, the incident highlights the additional challenges facing airports that regularly handle dangerous goods. Leipzig is one of Europe’s busiest freight hubs, where aircraft, cargo handlers, emergency services and hazardous materials can be concentrated within a relatively small operational area.
