Houthi Rebel Attacks In Red Sea To Stop
The attacks by Houthi Rebels on commercial shipping in the Red Sea region seem to be about to stop, although vessels owned by Israelis or flying the Israeli flag will still be targeted.
The Gaza ceasefire has led the terrorist group, who have been targeting cargo ships for a over a year now, to release a statement confirming their own ceasefire. However, they also said that in the event of any aggression against the republic of Yemen by the US, the UK, or Israel, they will resume attacks on US/UK vessels.
The attacks resulted in ocean freight carriers having to divert their containerships around Africa since last January, which resulted in chaos and disruption for Asia/European supply chains for the months that followed.
While the news is very much welcomed by the shipping industry, it is unlikely to result in carriers returning to the Suez Canal route in the very near future. They will undoubtedly need to build trust in the Houthis new claim before they risk their ships and crews on the shorter route.
However, this could be the first step towards a return to normal business at some point this year.
