Fire Erupts on Containership With Dangerous Goods; Four Crew Members Missing

A massive fire and multiple explosions have torn through a containership en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Mumbai, India, leaving four crew members missing and raising serious environmental concerns.

The incident began with an internal explosion aboard the vessel, which was transporting 157 containers of dangerous goods. The blast triggered a large-scale blaze that quickly engulfed parts of the ship.

The Indian Coast Guard responded swiftly to the vessel’s distress call and managed to rescue 18 of the 22 crew members onboard. Rescue operations continue as authorities search for the four missing seafarers.

According to the ship’s manifest, the cargo includes a wide array of hazardous materials:

  • 20 containers of flammable solids (IMO Class 4.1)

  • 20 containers of toxic substances (IMO Class 6.1)

  • 50 containers of flammable liquids (IMO Class 3)

Of particular concern is a container holding over 4,900 kilograms of a highly volatile organometallic substance (IMO Class 4.2) stored in five portable tanks. This substance is known to ignite spontaneously upon contact with air and react dangerously with water.

This is the second major maritime incident in the region in recent weeks. In May, the Liberian-flagged MSC Elsa 3 sank following an oil leak and cargo spillage after sustaining severe damage during the monsoon season.

Further afield, a car carrier – the Morning Midas, carrying nearly 3,000 vehicles – caught fire off the coast of Alaska last week. The crew was forced to abandon ship as flames spread rapidly.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the explosion and assess the environmental fallout. Meanwhile, maritime safety agencies are once again calling for tighter regulations on the transport of dangerous goods at sea.
