FAQ – Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors (DGSA’s)

The laws around the handling and movement of dangerous goods are most certainly amongst the most complex in the logistics industry, and the impact of managing dangerous goods incorrectly can be catastrophic.

Regulations differ from transport mode to transport mode and, while international guidelines are in place, from country to country. Therefore, we have put together this short FAQ, which is specifically aimed at the role of a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA).

Do I legally have to appoint a DGSA?

As defined by the UK’s CDG regulations, businesses involved in the transport of such goods must appoint a qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA). Specifically, if you are involved in the moving of dangerous goods as the consignor or carrier, or if you are involved in the relative activities of packing, filling, loading or unloading dangerous goods, then by law you must have an appointed DGSA.

Does my DGSA need to be qualified?

Yes. A qualified DGSA, will have passed the relevant UK Department for Transport written exams to have gained their DGSA certification, which is valid for 5 years.

What does a DGSA do?

In short, A DGSA assesses the risks involved with transporting dangerous goods and helps to prevent these risks for your business. Following yearly audits, they will usually advise you on your needs for legal compliance, incident and accident reporting, training, and generally provide advice on dangerous goods transportation.

Can I appoint a member of staff as our DGSA?

Yes, provided they have passed the relevant exam above.

Can I outsource the appointment of a DGSA?

Yes, this is the most common and often the most economical solution. As part of the Evolution Group, our sister company – DGSA Service & Consultancy Limited – are able to provide this important functionality for you, where our Managing Director – Terry Goldspink – is the lead DGSA.
