EU To Target E-Commerce Dangerous Goods Shipments
The European Union is understood to be planning to target low-value Chinese imports, mainly for ecommerce platforms such as Temu, Shein and Amazon Marketplace, by making them liable for dangerous goods products sold online.
The customs reforms, highlighted by the Financial Times, will mean that online platforms have to provide dangerous goods data before the shipments arrive in the EU. The new proposal follows a rise in dangerous goods shipped from Asia directly to EU based customers.
Over 4 billion low-value parcels were imported into the EU last year, which was four times the number recorded in 2022, and around 90% of them come in from China.
As things stand, the individual buyer is the importer of record, but if the new draft proposal is implemented, onus would switch to the online platform. Under these circumstances, the issue of undeclared dangerous goods and counterfeit products is expected to be better managed.
