Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors (DGSA’s): A Practical Guide
The laws governing the handling and transportation of dangerous goods are among the most complex in the logistics industry, and the consequences of non-compliance can be severe.
Regulations vary not only between different modes of transport, but also from country to country, despite international guidelines being in place. To help simplify the subject, we’ve put together this short guide focused on the role of a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA).
Do I legally need to appoint a DGSA?
Under the UK’s CDG regulations, businesses involved in the movement of dangerous goods are legally required to appoint a qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA).
This applies if your business is involved in the transportation of dangerous goods as a consignor or carrier, or if you undertake activities such as packing, filling, loading or unloading dangerous goods.
However, there are some exceptions for small and/or limited quanitites.
Does my DGSA need to be qualified?
Yes. A DGSA must hold a valid qualification, obtained by passing the relevant UK Department for Transport examinations. DGSA certification is valid for five years.
What does a DGSA do?
A DGSA’s role is to assess the risks associated with the transportation of dangerous goods and help businesses minimise those risks.
Typically, a DGSA will carry out annual audits and provide guidance on:
- Legal compliance
- Incident and accident reporting
- Staff training
- Safe transportation practices for dangerous goods
Can I appoint a member of staff as our DGSA?
Yes — provided they have successfully passed the required DGSA qualification exams.
Can I outsource the role of DGSA?
Yes. In fact, outsourcing is often the most practical and cost-effective solution.
As part of the Evolution Group, our sister company, DGSA Service & Consultancy Limited, can provide this service for your business. The company’s lead DGSA is Managing Director, Terry Goldspink.
