Artificial Intelligence To Tackle Dangerous Goods MisDeclarations
The World Shipping Council (WSC) has unveiled a new industry-led safety initiative designed to detect misdeclared and undeclared dangerous goods, a leading cause of ship fires.
The program uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to strengthen cargo safety and combines it with standardised inspection procedures to identify high-risk shipments before they are loaded onto vessels.
Ship fires are currently at their highest level in more than a decade. Misdeclared dangerous goods are believed to be responsible for at least 25% of all cargo-related incidents, posing serious risks to crew safety, vessels, and the environment.
This AI driven digital cargo screening tool, powered by National Cargo Bureau (NCB) advanced technology, is central to the new initiative. The system scans millions of cargo bookings in real time, using keyword searches, trade pattern analysis, and AI algorithms to flag potentially dangerous shipments.
Once flagged, alerts are reviewed by carriers and, if necessary, verified through targeted physical inspections.
The program also introduces common inspection standards for verifying shipments and establishes an incident feedback loop to integrate lessons from real-world cases. By leveraging technology and industry collaboration, the WSC hopes to reduce the frequency and severity of ship fires, enhancing safety across global maritime trade.
