Air Freight Rates Surge Amid Fuel Price Spike And Geopolitical Tensions
Air cargo markets are facing mounting pressure as airlines contend with rising jet fuel costs, constrained capacity, and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Instability in the Middle East has already had a noticeable impact on global freight patterns, particularly along major routes connecting Asia and Europe. Key Gulf hubs—traditionally central to efficient cargo transshipment—are seeing reduced activity levels. This shift is tightening overall capacity and contributing to broader delays across international supply chains.
Meanwhile, operating costs for carriers are climbing sharply. Jet fuel prices have surged in recent weeks, jumping from around $99 per barrel at the end of February to more than $200 this month. This rapid increase is placing significant financial strain on airlines.
To cope, many operators are reevaluating their networks. Lower-margin routes are being scaled back or temporarily suspended in an effort to control costs. While these adjustments help protect profitability, they also remove available capacity from the market, further squeezing cargo space.
These factors are now directly influencing pricing. According to industry data, since tensions escalated in the Middle East, global air cargo rates have increased by roughly 15–20% year-on-year, with fuel surcharges also rising. The Asia–Europe corridor has been especially affected, with average rate hikes of around 30%, depending on the route.
Although a potential peace agreement could help stabilise fuel prices and gradually restore capacity, any recovery is unlikely to be immediate. Even under improved conditions, the market may take several weeks to fully rebalance.
