AI Takes The Wheel in Brazil’s Dangerous Goods Revolution

A major transit authority in southeast Brazil is embracing artificial intelligence in a groundbreaking effort to improve dangerous goods safety on one of the country’s most important transport corridors.

The technology has been deployed along the Tamoios Highway, a 50-mile route linking the industrial city of São José dos Campos with the coastal destination of Caraguatatuba.

The highway cuts through mountainous terrain and includes Brazil’s longest road tunnel, stretching an impressive 3.5 miles. Managing the safe passage of vehicles through such a complex environment has always been a challenge — particularly when dangerous goods are involved.

Now, an advanced AI-powered monitoring system is changing the game. Using neural networking algorithms, the technology can identify international ADR hazard plates on vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 93 mph. The system then feeds this information into a sophisticated video management platform, allowing operators to track every hazardous cargo load moving through the tunnel network in real time.

When a vehicle carrying dangerous materials is detected, the software records key details including licence plate information, cargo type and precise timestamps. This enables the Operational Control Center to react immediately to any irregularities and activate emergency procedures tailored to the chemical risks involved.

The system has already proven its value. During a recent tunnel vehicle fire, operators were able to quickly identify the potential hazards, stop traffic and safely direct the driver out of danger.

Officials now plan to expand the technology to other strategic points along the route, with future developments potentially including AI-based leak detection near environmentally sensitive waterways.

As transport infrastructure becomes smarter and more connected, Brazil’s pioneering approach could offer a glimpse into the future of dangerous goods safety worldwide.
