Aerosol Transport Guidelines Receive Comprehensive Update

The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) has recently released the latest edition of its Transport Guide for Aerosols, offering comprehensive and updated guidance on the safe transport of aerosol products classified as dangerous goods.

The guide ensures compliance with international regulations and modal requirements for road, rail, sea, air, and postal transport, while also accounting for UK-specific exemptions and commercial practices.

Aerosols are categorised as Class 2 dangerous goods and are further divided into flammable (2.1), non-flammable (2.2), and toxic (2.3) categories, each with its own classification and packaging criteria.

For limited quantities, relaxed rules apply to aerosols up to one litre (or 120 ml for toxic aerosols), whereas larger shipments require full regulatory compliance, including UN-tested packaging, hazard labelling, and detailed documentation.

The guide also covers modal transport guidance, detailing requirements for road and rail (ADR/RID), sea (IMDG Code), air (ICAO/IATA). This includes specific packaging instructions and restrictions outlined for each mode, including distinct exclusions for air transport, where some aerosols are prohibited altogether.

Additionally, the guide provides crucial information on handling waste aerosols, emphasising proper labelling and adherence to ADR and IMDG guidelines. BAMA also highlights the critical need for mandatory training for all personnel involved in the transport of aerosols to ensure safety and legal compliance.
